MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Millions of people gather to watch intense football matches, anticipating all the action on-field led by men. The same adrenaline rush is apparent in every AIA Philam Life 7’s Football League match, but the excitement is no longer limited to men. With the expansion to include women and youth teams, the league has become broader, now appealing to a larger audience base.
“I saw a huge gap in the football market in the Philippines and it has been my personal advocacy to bridge this and make the sport inclusive so more people will appreciate it. Hopefully, what I’m doing sets up a good foundation here in the country,” said AIA Philam Life 7’s Football League founder Anton del Rosario. From the initial 8 teams in the first season, the league has grown exponentially and will now have 80 teams playing in each gameday, composed of 24 men’s, 10 women’s, and 48 youth teams, led by coaches like Aly Borromeo and Daniel Matsunaga who not only teach drills on the field but prepare them mentally for every grueling match.
Football has gained popularity among the youth in the country, as they aspire to become superstars like del Rosario himself, who discovered his love for the sport at the age of six, and has since been playing for numerous clubs before becoming a defender of the Azkals.
“Football should be an all-inclusive sport and we’re happy that the league we’ve been supporting since last year has opened its arms wider to welcome more people to play the sport,” shared Kelvin Ang, AIA Philam Life Chief Executive Officer. “The league’s expansion also means growth in the audience. And with more people getting exposed to the sport, we are given more opportunities to fulfill our brand promise of empowering Filipinos to live healthier, longer, and better lives.”
The league achieved huge milestones last year with the partnership with AIA Philam Life, the conclusion of the Philam Vitality Kampeon 7’s Cup, its successful all-star football tournament, the growth of the league that ended the year with 66 participating teams, and the participation of AIA global ambassador David Beckham at the 7’s Youth Football Clinic.
The future of the league looks bright with Season Five kicking off simultaneously in McKinley Stadium, Muntinlupa, Clark, Bacolod and Davao on February 9, and the Iloilo leg on February 15. With more teams joining the league, there’s definitely more exciting things to watch out for as they continue to elevate the action on field with the AIA Philam Life 7’s Football League.
